5 Young Adult Novels That People Should Read!

If I had dollar for every time someone's told me to grow up and stop reading YA fiction, I would be really rich by now. Unfortunately, people don't realize that YA literature isn't just teenage romance. Or college romance. Romance is a subgenre. There are so many wonderful books in YA that you could read. Here are five that I would personally recommend.

Amy and Roger's Epic Detour - Morgan Matson

Book Blurb: Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew--just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road--diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards--this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself.

Why: Because this story tugs right at your heart strings, especially if you're grieving the loss of a loved one and you believe that taking a road trip is the best way to come to terms with everything that has happened - and to say goodbye.

Bookishly Ever After - Isabel Bandeira

Book Blurb: In a perfect world, sixteen-year-old Phoebe Martins’ life would be a book. Preferably one filled with magic and a hot paranormal love interest. Unfortunately, her life probably wouldn’t even qualify for a quiet contemporary.
Everything changes when Phoebe learns that Dev, the hottest guy in the clarinet section, might actually have a crush on her. So, Phoebe turns to the heroines in her favorite books for inspiration, but becoming as awesome as her book characters isn’t as easy as it sounds. When another girl nets Dev for herself right out from under Phoebe’s nose, she’s crushed.
And, to up the suckage, she gets assigned as his co-counselor at a sixth grade camp and has to spend an entire week tied to the hip with the one guy on the planet she wanted to avoid. Can she make it through the potential danger of romantic bonfires and nature walks, or will her counseling career end in emotional disaster? Can she ever go back to her happy world of fictional boys after falling for the real thing?
Find out if Dev makes Phoebe forget all her book boyfriends in this first book of the Ever After Series.
Why: Deep down inside all of us wish to find the perfect guy. Often times this perfect guy exists only in books. The idea of Phoebe using her book boyfriends to impress her real life love interest is intriguing and original...and definitely makes for a truly hilarious read.

When Dimple Met Rishi - Sandhya Menon

Book Blurb: Meet Dimple.

Her main aim in life is to escape her traditional parents, get to university and begin her plan for tech world domination.
Meet Rishi.
He's rich, good-looking and a hopeless romantic. His parents think Dimple is the perfect match for him, but she's got other plans...
Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works even harder to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.
As joyfully refreshing as Rainbow Rowell, Jenny Han and Nicola Yoon, When Dimple Met Rishi is a frothy, funny contemporary romance told from the dual perspectives of two Indian American protagonists. While Dimple is fighting her family traditions, Rishi couldn't be happier to follow in the footsteps of his parents - could sparks fly between this odd couple, or is this matchmaking attempt doomed to fail?
Why: This book came into being because publishers were looking for diversity in YA literature. And Dimple and Rishi are two Indian-American characters who are caught between the world they live in and the world their parents want them to live in. The story has heart.

Geek Charming - Robin Palmer

Book Blurb: Dylan Shoenfield is the princess of L.A.'s posh Castle Heights High. She has the coolest boyfriend, the most popular friends, and a brand-new 'it' bag that everyone covets. But when she accidentally tosses her bag into a fountain, this princess comes face-to-face with her own personal frog: self professed film geek Josh Rosen. In return for rescuing Dylan's bag, Josh convinces Dylan to let him film her for his documentary on high school popularity. Reluctantly, Dylan lets F-list Josh into her A-list world, and is shocked to realize that sometimes nerds can be pretty cool. But when Dylan's so-called prince charming of a boyfriend dumps her flat, her life--and her social status--comes to a crashing halt. Can Dylan--with Josh's help--pull the pieces together to create her own happily-ever-after?

Why: A retelling of the fairy tale The Frog Prince, set in modern day L.A. I personally came across this book after watching the Disney Channel movie. Believe me, the book really is much better. Give this one a chance.
